The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project Iii: a Complete 4300 Deg Survey of Blue Horizontal Branch Stars in the Metal-weak Thick Disk and Inner Halo
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a complete spectroscopic survey of 2414 2MASS-selected blue horizontal branch (BHB) candidates selected over 4300 deg of the sky. We identify 655 BHB stars in this non-kinematically selected sample. We calculate the luminosity function of field BHB stars and find evidence for very few hot BHB stars in the field. The BHB stars located at a distance from the Galactic plane |Z| < 4 kpc trace what is clearly a metal-weak thick disk population, with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = −1.7, a rotation velocity gradient of dvrot/d|Z| = −28± 3.4 km s −1 in the region |Z| < 6 kpc, and a density scale height of hZ = 1.26± 0.1 kpc. The BHB stars located at 5 < |Z| < 9 kpc are a predominantly inner-halo population, with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = −2.0 and a mean Galactic rotation of −4 ± 31 km s. We infer the density of halo and thick disk BHB stars is 104± 37 kpc near the Sun, and the relative normalization of halo to thick-disk BHB stars is 4± 1% near the Sun. The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project I: Stellar Spectral Analysis
The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project is a photometric and spectroscopic survey from which we select relatively blue stars (V −R < 0.30 mag) as probes of the Milky Way halo. The Survey strip spans the range of Galactic latitude 35 < b < 88, allowing us to study the nature of populations of stars and their systematic motions as a function of Galactic latitude. One of our primary goals is to u...
متن کاملThe Century Survey Galactic Halo Project Ii: Global Properties and the Luminosity Function of Field Blue Horizontal Branch Stars
We discuss a 175 deg spectroscopic survey for blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the Galactic halo. We use the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to select BHB candidates, and find that the 2MASS and SDSS color-selection is 38% and 50% efficient, respectively, for BHB stars. Our samples include one likely run-away B7 star 6 kpc below the Galactic plane....
متن کاملA Catalog of Candidate Field Horizontal - Branch and A - Type Stars . III . A 2 MASS - Cleaned
We present coordinates and available photometric information (either from previous or recent broadband UBV observations, and near-infrared photometry from the 2MASS Point Source Catalog) for 12056 stars (11516 of which are unique) identified in the HK Survey of Beers and colleagues as candidate field horizontal-branch or A-type stars. These stars, in the apparent magnitude range 10 ≤ B ≤ 16.0, ...
متن کاملKinematics of the Galactic Halo from Horizontal Branch stars in the Hamburg/ESO Survey
Large samples of Field Horizontal Branch (FHB) stars make excellent tracers of the Galactic halo; by studying their kinematics, one can infer important physical properties of our Galaxy. Here we present the results of a medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of 530 FHB stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. The stars have a mean distance of ∼ 7 kpc and thus probe the inner parts of the Mil...
متن کاملDeep HST V - and I-Band Observations of the Halo of M31: Evidence for Multiple Stellar Populations
We present deep (V ≃ 27) V and I -band stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope’s WFPC2 in two fields in the M31 halo. These fields are located 32 and 50 from the center of M31 approximately along the SE minor axis at the locations of the M31 globular star clusters G302 and G312 respectively. The M31 halo luminosity functions are not consistent with a single high-metallicity...
